Guryong Village or Nine Dragons Village is the last remaining shantytown in Seoul, South Korea. Early in the 1980’s a large-scale city revitalization plan, ahead of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, evicted thousands of residents from their homes when the 40 districts they lived in were refurbished. Eventually, many gathered on an empty lot in the then-remote area of Gangnam. This area eventually became Guryong Village, home to over 2,000 displaced citizens. Now, Korea’s poorest village is literally in the shadow of the highest priced real estate in Seoul. Soon the residents that have been living in homes built with wreckage salvaged from construction sites will be evicted once again in the name of progress.

In April of 2013, Drew A. Kelley was assigned by The Orange County Register to document ballet students from Orange County, California as they competed in the Youth America Grand Prix finals in New York City. The YAGP is the world’s largest student ballet competition but more importantly it is a platform for young dancers to be seen. Regardless of who wins, dancers have the opportunity to receive scholarships and full-time positions in companies around the world.
While on assignment Drew was taken aback by the intensity backstage and his focus shifted. He chose to capture not only the dancers from California but all the dancers that had traveled there to compete. This book is the accumulation of moments captured backstage.
